I’m reminded of the Mexamerica section of Joel Garreau’s book The Nine Nations of North America. A quote: “The conquistadors and the padres saw this region whole, without imaginary lines creating division between the state of Sonora and the US. The desert was the same, the cactuses were the same, the climate was the same, and the people were the same….The Anglo world is (just) the latest invader of these parts, not the Indian, Mexican and Spanish.” Garreau’s descriptions, although written in 1981, capture the situation even today (although we’re further along in the transition….).
